I have a great affection for cemeteries. I find them to be beautiful, soulful places where I can get lost in peaceful reflection. I can spend hour upon hour exploring and discovering stories left untold. Yet I know that to some people cemeteries can be unnerving, and perhaps even a bit creepy. I hope you enjoy my take on this week’s photo challenge!

I know quite a few people that are into cemeteries, hell I used to walk in the local one by my old house daily.

I have a friend who incorporates a cemetery near her home into the route for her daily morning runs- she swears it’s the calmest part of her day.

I enjoyed it when I walked there because of zero traffic to worry about.

Like you, I enjoy walking through and imagining the stories. The feelings vary depending on the time of day.

True. These were taken at Trinity Church. I would have loved to have gone back at night, but I love not getting arrested just a little more. 😉

Karen, my wife and I really enjoy visiting and photographing cemeteries, especially older ones. We have a whole bunch of cemetery and gravestone pics in the unofficial “portfolio.”

That’s awesome! I’m glad to hear that I’m not alone on this. 🙂

Many communities have turned large, rambling sections of cemeteries (typically ones that are “full”) into a sort of open public park, complete with shaded groves, benches, fountains, and well-maintained pathways. Also, mausoleums are often beautiful works of architecture that reflect personal style and evoke particular eras or themes. All great photo fodder!

I love that idea. I am going to have to do some more exploring… 🙂

I always wanted to take a walk in a cemetery, lay down flowers for someone I don’t know. A beautiful resting place – far from creepy.

That is a lovely idea! I may have to do that myself! 🙂

It sure is spooky and I am in a way fascinated with the idea of taking a walk (and maybe photographing) cemeteries but somehow don’t have the courage to do it at all! Sounds strange! No?

I highly recommend that you give it a try. You may find it to be peaceful once you get past the initial strangeness of it… 🙂

We enjoy visiting cemeteries, too, wondering about the lives of the people buried there, looking at the headstones and dates, etc.

The ones that always get me are the markers for little children from back in the 1700-1800s. You can only imagine what illness or tragedy claimed them so young.

I love the history lesson that cemeteries provide, especially the ones that date back to the 1700s. There is a story behind each marker, monument, and headstone…

I like cemeteries, but I’ve never visited one at night though. Then maybe I’d find it a little creepy.

I’m sure a late-night visit would add a certain horror movie-like effect! 😉

Yeah I don’t think I’d attend that showing. 🙂

Although I am sure there are many stories to be told in cemetaries, I will leave it to others to explore them as I am not keen!

No, they are not for everyone, that’s for sure!

Like so many of the others who commented, I love to spend time in cemeteries. It’s heartening to see I’m not alone.
What you’ve shown here is technically a churchyard. In Minnesota, we don’t have many, and when we do, they are not so dense with stones. Here we have mostly graveyards which are separated from their churches, sometimes by miles. I got to visit my first churchyard when I vacationed in North Carolina last year. It was absolutely beautiful … and of course the graves were much older than any in the upper Midwest.

Great point- I would not have thought to make the clarification on the churchyard vs the graveyard. I would think the cemeteries in Minnesota would look incredibly beautiful in the wintertime after a fresh snowfall. I’d love to see that…
